Every now and again a song can hit us differently than the rest. A song that stands out the first time you hear it and holds that feeling after successive plays over the days and months ahead. The first week of December 2020, the closing month of a year that was full of chaos, sadness, and unpredictability, The Menahan Street Band released a song that brought peace, reflection, and hope.
There's a beauty in this song that represents something a lot of us probably needed or still need. It brings calmness. It brings love. It brings heartache, yet also brings an outlook of inner repair. It had been 9 years since the band had released their previous album and this song was a perfect return for a group of musicians who had brought consistency to the music scene in years past. Daptone Records, a label that still flies under the radar even after bringing us Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Charles Bradley, The Budos Band, and more recently the fantastic Thee Sacred Souls, is also home to The Menahan Street Band. Among a slew of quality tracks in their catalogue ( "Home Again," "Keep Coming Back," "Driftwood," among others) "Midnight Morning" represents a beauty of a song. Songs will come in and out of our lives and resonate differently throughout the years. Then there are the songs that will stick around and maintain the feeling they had the first time you heard it well onto the present days of listening. I feel this one will stick around in my playlist for years to come.
