Mayer Hawthorne's "Wine & Vinyl Hour" Comes To An End

On October 21st, 2021, Mayer Hawthorne streamed his final episode of the "Wine & Vinyl Hour" on YouTube. The weekly stream began March 19, 2020 at the very beginning of all the shutdowns across the world. Each episode had Mayer Hawthorne playing select cuts from his vinyl collection while he simultaneously sipped on some of his favorite wines. He joked around, gave commentary, shared music history, engaged with users in the chat, played deep cuts, and ended each show with his Moment of Zen track choice taking us out of the stream.

Before I discovered Twitch there were 2 streams I looked forward to and followed throughout the months of 2020 and into 2021: Questlove's "DJ Questlove Presents:" and Mayer Hawthorne's "Wine & Vinyl Hour." They became bright spots in an otherwise somber span of time. I stumbled upon the Wine and Vinyl Hour a couple months after its debut but it immediately became a staple to my Thursday viewings. It was a bonus that my daughter would remind me a few times if I was going to watch it. She knew what it meant to me and saw the interest and joy it brought me when such emotions were more important than usual. During 2021 the busy days of work and life prevented me from tuning in each week but all episodes were and still are archived on YouTube. All audio seems to be in tact and no music seems to be blocked due to copy write issues. With the archiving of episodes it allowed me to catch up every now and again. I could easily play an episode or two at any time and watch what I had missed. The good news is that if you have never seen an episode you can find it on YouTube and experience the greatness and smoothness of the show. Occasionally I would engage in the chat and one time I got a response from Mayer Hawthorne live during the stream. I forgot why it came up but I asked if he had ever wanted to be on the show Kids Incorporated when he was younger. As he was reading the chat he nearly choked on his wine and quickly responded by re-reading the question and saying that may be the best question he's ever been asked on the show before. He continued and called me out by name and said I was a legend and that of course he wanted to be on the show. Good times, good memories. I've been a fan of Mayer Hawthorne for years and to be able to engage in conversation (via chat) with someone whose music has been a part of my life, was such a cool moment. The Wine & Vinyl Hour may have come to an end for now but the cult classic status of the show should live on throughout the years. Whether you watched the show or never had the chance to catch an episode, I suggest going to YouTube and picking a random episode to enjoy what he shared with all of us.
