In 1996 I remember one of the local radio stations (Jammin Z90, 90.3 in San Diego) had their weekday "Battle of The Jams," contest where they let the fans decide which song would be put into rotation. Once in a while they would veer off and do a special head to head battle and on one occasion in 1996 they put K-Ci Hailey's 'Wildflower" remake up against New Birth's original "Wildflower." It was mentioned that K-Ci's version was going to be available on the "Rhythm of the Games" compilation that was a promotional album associated with the Olympic games being held in Atlanta that year. As a teen I remember considering buying the album just for the "Wildflower" remake but the rest of the album didn't interest me at the time.
This week I was searching for music and accidentally games across a track on the album. I looked up the track listing, checked the songs on YouTube, and was surprised at the gems that are included on this compilation. Aside from K-Ci's track it includes some great songs from Mary J Blige, Usher, Brian Mcknight, Soul For Real, a Star Spangled Banner rendition from Boyz II Men, and the albums standout, a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" from Living Colour front man Corey Glover. I have no recollection of this song and I'm surprised this is the first time I'm hearing of it. However, I'm glad I found this song as it's beauty is evident. Similar to many soundtracks and other compilations, it's isn't available on most (or any) streaming formats so it's either hear it on YouTube or find the album (CD/Vinyl) somewhere. It's kind of a shame this song isn't more well known. Take a listen and enjoy the beauty of Corey Glover's rendition on the timeless classic, "Imagine."
Fun Fact:
For those that aren't aware, Corey Glover, aside from being in the rock band Living Colour, was also an actor and if you've seen the movie "Platoon," then you've seen him there as well.
