The world lost a great soul when Sharon Jones passed away 5 years ago today. Vibrant, friendly, and always looking like she was ready to sing her heart out, Sharon Jones had a presence that was displayed well beyond her close family and friends. In September 2016 I had the opportunity to see Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings play live at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA. That concert is such a memorable moment in my lifetime that came at a pretty low feeling point. I look back and wonder how I pulled myself to attend it knowing how I felt. I was at the beginning of a divorce and although music played a large part in helping me get thru tough times, I didn't want to be around anyone and especially a large crowd or an event full of energy and people having a good time. But I went and it turned out to be a showcase of Sharon Jones bringing down the house.
Sharon Jones had been diagnosed and had conquered her cancer the 1st time and was back on the road. Seeing her energy level on stage you would never have known she was battling a 2nd round with the return of her cancer during this leg of the tour. It would end up being one of her last shows as weeks later she'd postpone touring due to the fight she was up against. 2 months later she would pass away. During her performance she shined and mentioned how the crowds from her concerts were giving her life and she loved the support and energy in the room. It would later come out that after her performances she'd be so drained of the little energy she had that she'd basically collapse and have to rest to recover immediately after her shows. Aside from the songs she performed, the thing I remember most about that concert was her laughter. She loved to joke around during her songs and sang with such power to keep the crowd entertained. Sharon Jones music always holds a special place in my heart. She's an artist who peaked much later in life than one would expect. She deserved more success and a larger following but the lasting impression her music left on the world is still a shining representation of her talent. I suggest viewing the documentary "Miss Sharon Jones," as it showcases her first battle with cancer and overcoming it with faith, will power, and the support of family and friends.
I can't hear a Sharon Jones song without immediately thinking of her smile and the fact she is no longer around. However, I love that people continue to discover her music as time goes on and I'm sure she's smiling down on us knowing the joy it brings to old and new listeners.
